BEGINNER FUSING CLASS

NEXT AVAILABLE CLASS
- Oct 24th. The dates of the 3 classes are; Oct. 24, Nov. 7 & 14th. The class is held on Monday nights from 7:00 - 9:00 PM.

1st class - This class is an introduction to the glass fusing process. In the first class we will discuss the types of glass that need to be used and the basic workings of the kilns, kiln shelves, shelf primers and tools needed for firing. Each student will prepare four 4" square tiles to learn the basic construction techniques. The construction techniques include the different types of glues that can be used, manipulating stringers in a candle flame and layering techiques. We will provide eight 4" square sheets of System 96 colored and clear glass, as well as scraps of COE 96, stringers, noodles, glue, and other supplies.

2nd class - The second class will be an introduction to Jewelry Basics. Each student will make at least one pair of earrings and at least 2 - 3 pendants. Before we get into the actual jewelry class, we will go over everyone's projects from the previous session, discuss the techniques that were used and the results from those techniques.

After the review of the previous session, students will commence work on their jewelry pieces. They will be introduced to fiber paper and its use as a glass separator and how it can be used to create a channel in jewelry. We will discuss the different types of jewelry findings and wire that can be used. Students will also be introduced to Dichroic glass- one of the most intriguing and eye-catching glasses ever made. We will provide all fusing glass, dichroic glass and jewelry findings.

3rd class - At the beginning of the third class we will review the results from the previous week and attach jewelry findings to the jewelry pieces made from that session.

The third class will deal with slumping and draping. Students will have a choice of making an 8" sushi plate or draping an 8" square over a floral former to create a free-form vase. As the students are working on their projects, we will have 2 kilns firing so they can view the process. One kiln will be slumping a plate in a mold, and the other kiln will have a small drape over a floral former
. We will provide each student with an 8" square of System 96 glass in a color and a clear. We will also provide scraps of 96, stringers, noodles, glue and other supplies. Students will be able to pick up their finished pieces the following week.

Maximum size of our class- 16 students. All classes held at Stained Glass Workshop's facility.
